Vitamin B12 is essential for energy production, heart health and brain function. It is necessary for growth and development and DNA synthesis. Those at the highest risk for developing a B12 deficiency are patients with MTHFR, Pernicious anemia, being age 60 and older and having a vegetarian diet. Patients also at risk are those taking medications that inhibit absorption (PPI – Prilosec, Prevacid, Cimetidine, Ranitidine, Metformin) or patients that have had gastrointestinal surgery.
